Roy Hodgson is set to rest Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres after declaring he intends to make full use of his 25 man squad when his team face Steaua Bucharest in the UEFA Europa League.
Despite the criticisms aimed at Sir Alex Ferguson for making 10 changes for Manchester United’s Champions League game against Rangers, the Liverpool boss intends to follow with wholesale changes for the Group K game at Anfield tonight.
"What we will do is pretty much what Sir Alex did," said Hodgson. "There is no point having a squad of 25, most of whom are internationals, and then trying to play the same XI.
"Games like this are important for me to try to get to know players better, because I am still learning about a lot of them, especially those who I have not had chance to do much work with yet."
This means new signing Raul Meireles could get a start along with David Ngog who already has three European goals to his credit this term.
Joe Cole will be chomping at the bit for a run out having missed the last three Premier League games due to suspension.
Dirk Kuyt and Fabio Aurelio are definite absentees due to injury.
Steaua have four players ineligible, defenders George Galamez and Pablo Brandan along with strikers Marius Onofras and Marius Bilasco played for Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League qualifiers.
