Real Madrid may not have begun the new La Liga season in scintillating fashion but they still remain one of the favourites in the Champions League betting and should have too many guns for French Ligue 1 strugglers Auxerre.
Bookmaker Victor Chandler is offering odds of 11/2, prior to the game, for Real to present Jose Mourinho with his third Champions League trophy.
Mourinho’s team have only scored six times in five La Liga games so far, not a return you’d expect from a forward line that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Mezut Ozil. But ‘The Special One’ is not normally prone to panic and he’ll be happy that his team are keeping the back door shut in general.
They eased past Ajax on match day one of the Champions League and, despite struggling on occasions away from home against supposedly lesser opposition, appear to have little reason to fear a trip to the Stade de l’Abbe-Deschamps, where Auxerre have so far only managed a couple of draws in domestic football.
Jean Fernandez’s team did pull off a shock in the Champions League play-offs when they knocked out Zenit St Petersburg but that has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing start to the campaign and suggests they may have over-achieved last season.
Betting on away sides at odds-on in the Champions League is a well-trodden road to the poor house but Auxerre were easily brushed aside by AC Milan a couple of weeks ago and you would put Real Madrid at least on a par with the Italians. At odds of 8/13 with Boylesports, the Spaniards are difficult to oppose.
