Qualifier Jarkko Nieminen continued his good run of form when beating Xavier Malisse in straight sets to set up a second round clash with number eight seed Andy Roddick.
The left-handed Nieminen beat his Belgian opponent 64 63 to follow up his bold show at last week’s Swiss Indoors Open where he lost out to Novak Djokavic in a tight second round match.
The 29-year-old Finn has clawed his way up to number 39 in the rankings since going out in the first round of the US Open, an appearance in the final at Bangkok in September was followed by a semi-final appearance in Stockholm to reach the top 50 for the first time since May 2009.
Arnaud Clement won a tight three set match against Feliciano Lopez to beat the Spaniard for the second successive year in this event.
Clement won the only break point of the game to win the deciding set 63 after the pair shared the first two sets after tie-breaks.
