Tomas Berdych got back to winning ways with a crushing display of serving against wild card Florent Serra on the fast hard court of Paris on Tuesday.
The world number 6 dominated throughout, losing just one point to serve and converting four break points to win 63 61.
Victory ended Berdych’s three match losing run and put him on-course for the ATP World Tour Finals in London next week.
Gael Monfils made it through to the third round after defeating Benjamin Becker 7-6(4) 64, last years runner-up came from 1-5 to win the first set before seeing out the second set to the delight of home fans.
Wednesday sees the conclusion of the second round and Scotland’s Andy Murray meets David former tournament winner David Nalbandian.
Stan James bet 11/8 for Murray to win in straights sets, in their last encounter the Scot won 62 62 on his way to winning the Masters event in Toronto.
In the evening session number one seed Roger Federer takes of Richard Gasquet who he has beaten in six of seven head to head encounters, Gasquet’s only win coming at Monte-Carlo in 2005.
Federer is expected to cruise through this match-up and Irish bookmaker Boylesports currently offer the best odds of 11/5 for Federer to go on to win the tournament.
