Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will make his long awaited return to action when Premier League strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers are visitors to Anfield on Wednesday night. Gerrard has recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered at Wembley on 17th November when playing for England in the dismal friendly international defeat to France which has forced him to miss Liverpool’s last six games. Roy Hodgson’s main man has been fit for a couple of weeks but Gerrard’s return has been delayed by the weather as Liverpool have not played since the Europa League ‘dead rubber’ at home to Utrecht on 15th December. While sidelined, the club captain has seen his teammates continue their improving league home form with two 3-0 wins against West Ham United and Aston Villa, they will look to climb back into the top half with a win against another out-of-form side in Wolves. Mick McCarthy’s side has dropped to bottom of the league having earned just one point away from home this season and prospects for his injury ravaged team will not be helped by the return of Anfield’s talisman. Wolves must find a way to raise spirits after the 2-1 Boxing Day defeat at home to fellow relegation candidates Wigan but are without the heart of the team with injuries to skipper Karl Henry, key striker Kevin Doyle and experienced central defender Jody Craddock. It was Christmas time when Liverpool last entertained Wolves who returned after a five year absence from the Premier League, Gerrard opened the scoring in the 2009 Boxing Day fixture when the Reds ran out 2-0 winners. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power is offering odds of 11/2 for Liverpool’s Captain Marvel to return in a blaze of glory and score the first goal again in Wednesday’s live televised game.
