Danny Welbeck was a surprise call up to the full England squad for Tuesday’s international friendly match against Ghana at Wembley. The announcement was made following news that Aaron Lennon was forced to pull out of the game as a precaution with a minor hamstring problem.

Welbeck is playing for Premier League club Sunderland where he is on loan from Manchester United and is yet to play a full game in two appearances since returning from a two-month absence after undergoing knee surgery. It was understood that he was omitted from Stuart Pearce’s England Under 21 side that lost to Iceland on Monday to allow time him time to reach full match fitness.

England boss Fabio Capello will make at least seven changes for the Ghana match and he confirmed at his press conference that Gareth Barry will take over the captaincy from newly re-instated John Terry.

Terry was one of five players released from the squad that gathered for Euro 2011 group match against Wales at the weekend and with Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard out with injury, the Italian tactician turned to Barry who is the most experienced player in the remaining squad with 45 caps.

Capello explained to reporters: "He is a good player, he has played most matches for me and is a good captain, he is also the one with most caps.”

Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole have returned to Stamford Bridge with Terry, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and Tottenham’s Michael Dawson have also returned to their clubs to prepare for important Champions League games.

Capello confirmed Joe Hart would start in goal and Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill, Leighton Baines and Andy Carroll would also make the starting eleven. Scott Parker must prove his fitness after picking up a knock, but will play if fit.

The England supremo was still considering the rest of his team, but teenage sensation Jack Wilshere is expected to feature again after his outstanding performance alongside Parker in the 2-0 win against Wales.
