World number four Andy Murray moved up a gear in his US Open preparations with an impressive third round victory against Alex Bogolomov Jr at the Western & Southern Open in Ohio. It was a much improved display on recent performances which left Unibet offering the best odds of 10/1 for Murray to win the US Open.
Murray booked his quarter final place at the ATP World Tour Masters event in Cincinnati on Thursday with a straight sets win to exact his revenge for a recent defeat to the American in Miami.
The British number one took an hour and 41 minutes to dispose of his opponent 6-2, 7-5 and said afterwards: "I played better today, I was struggling a lot in Miami and didn't play well at all. So I am glad to come through in two sets and forget about the match I played against him in Miami."
Murray has his eye firmly set on claiming his first grand slam at the US Open in Forest Hills in two weeks time, a tournament he has always believed he is suited to win. Since losing his Wimbledon semi-final to Rafael Nadal in June, Murray’s US Open preparations started badly with a shock defeat to Kevin Anderson in the Rogers Cup last week. He returned to winning ways with a scrappy second round victory over David Nalbandian in Cincinnati on Wednesday before upping his game a notch against Bogolomov.
BBC commentator Philip Studd said of his latest display: “It was a much improved performance from Murray who looked more confident and in control of his game. He outclassed the increasingly frustrated Bogomolov.
He added: “There's still plenty of room for improvement but this was tennis more befitting of a world number four - and the signs are encouraging."
Murray will meet Gilles Simon in the Western & Southern quarter-final, the Scot is generally available at odds of 6/1 to win the Cincinnati Masters event.
