HIGGINS BIDS FOR ELUSIVE PREMIER LEAGUE SNOOKER TITLE
John Higgins will make his second appearance of the 2011 Premier League Snooker when the quick-fire snooker competition arrives at Ravenscraig Sports Facility in Motherwell on Thursday 22 September. Higgins had top billing for the opening night of Premier League Snooker in Skegness where he suffered defeat in the final of the first mini-tournament of the series.
The world champion will be keen to go one better this time as he bids for an elusive, second Premier League Snooker title. Higgins won the Premier League Snooker in 1999 and since then has finished runner up on three occasions, in 2002, 2004 and 2007. Despite dominating world snooker in recent times, Higgins has yet to stamp his authority on Premier League Snooker which has largely been the territory of Ronnie O’Sullivan, a winner in six of the last seven years.
Higgins lost 3-0 to Matthew Stevens in the final of week one after beating Jimmy White 3-0 in the semi-final. As each player makes four appearances before the play-offs are decided, Higgins will want to take six points from week two to ensure he stays in touch with the early leaders. His semi-final opponent next Thursday is Neil Robertson, who also featured in week one and suffered a whitewash at the hands of Stevens. Higgins is 4/6 favourite to beat the 2010 World Snooker Champion whose best Premier League Snooker finish was last year when reaching the semi-finals. Robertson is available at odds of 5/4 with SkyBet and Stan James to come out on top of the first match of the night.
The winner will play Ding Junhui or Shaun Murphy from a match in which bookmakers are struggling to determine a clear favourite. Both players can be backed at odds of 10/11, Junhui with Victor Chandler and Murphy with William Hill. Ding Junhui, who was a Premier League Snooker semi-finalist in 2007, is making his first appearance in this year’s event while Murphy makes a quick re-appearance after being beaten 3-1 by Mark Williams in the final of week two.
