Last weekend's golf tournaments proved very expensive for online bookmakers Bet365 and Coral but very lucky for a Belfast punter who won £140 000 by mistake !

Victory for Paul Lawrie in the Qatar Masters and Kyle Stanley in the Phoenix Open cost leading online bookmaker Bet365 £91 331.25 after one inspired punter selected both golfers in a £25 each way double. Desperate news for the Stoke on Trent based bookie who were clobbered with a similar bet costing £87 000 just a week earlier.

However with annual profits of around £100M we are sure Bet365 will carry on regardless. Steve Freeth spokesman for Bet365 said "Paul Lawrie was backed from 75/1 into 40/1 meaning we lost over £100,000 on the Qatar Masters, Kyle Stanley was a six figure loser for us in singles alone and the number of Stanley/Lawrie double backers ran into double figures.Safe to say it’s been a bad couple of weeks!”

The same two golf tournaments cost Coral an amazing      £140 000 after a 60 year old Belfast man selected Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano to win the Qatar Masters and Kyle Stanley for the Waste Management Phoenix Open in a £50 each-way double. However the punter wrongly selected Castano to be leading after the 1st Round rather than winning the tournament and thought his bet was a loser as Scotland's Paul Lawrie scooped the first prize in the wind affected event.

Coral spokesman David Stevens said this week: “The customer was unaware of his mistake, and when Lawrie triumphed in Qatar, he assumed his double had gone down as Gonzalo Fernando-Castano finished outside the top five, so he didn’t tune in to see Kyle Stanley complete a remarkable victory in America.

Stevens continued " “When he logged on to his account on Monday morning, he got a very pleasant surprise to see his balance was almost £140,000."

Is this the luckiest punter ever ?
