Chelsea hammered Wolves 6-0 in the third round of the Capital One Cup at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to go clear favourites to win the competition.
With fellow Premier League pacesetters Manchester City and Everton suffering shock defeats, Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea team is 5/1 to win the League Cup at Coral with odds as low as 3/1 with some online bookmakers.
Chelsea produced an all-round display with six different players contributing the goals, three each side of half time. The Blues defenders were little more than bystanders as the four-time League Cup winners clinically disposed of their Championship opponents to progress to the fourth round.
Roberto Mancini was involved in a verbal spat with opposing manager Paul Lambert as Aston Villa produced the surprise of the night, winning 4-2 at the Etihad. Neil Warnock masterminded a 2-1 victory for Leeds at Elland Road to send Everton crashing out of the League Cup at the first time of asking and West Ham were the third Premier League side to be knocked out as Wigan swept the Hammers aside with a 4-1 win at Upton Park.
Southampton progressed at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday with a 2-0 win at St Mary’s while there were away wins for Swansea, 3-2 at Crawley and ten-man Sunderland, 2-0 at Milton Keynes Dons.
Three more Premier League clubs will fall by the wayside in Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup third round, Manchester United entertain Newcastle and QPR take on Reading at Loftus Road. Liverpool return to The Hawthorns where they were beaten 3-0 by West Brom on the opening day of the Premier League season. Arsenal, Norwich and Tottenham are also in action against lower league opponents.
