The astonishing comeback victory of Europe to win the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah has cost bookmakers millions after Tiger Wood suprisingly conceeded a 3ft par putt on the last green to hand victory to Jose Maria Olazabal's spirited team.

Europe had been best odds at 17/2 with Bet365 going into the final day with a four point deficit but early wins for Luke Donald,Ian Poulter , Rory Mcilroy and Justin Rose gave the European team belief that they could pull off an amazing victory. However as late as 8.30pm last night Europe were 33/1 to win the Ryder Cup with USA quoted at odds of 1/50 !

A tie looked on the cards once Martin Kaymer had secured retention of the Ryder Cup with a win over the beleagured Steve Stricker and that would have been the perfect result for bookmakers. A spokesman for Ladbrokes said :“No-one bets on a tie so the (Europe)win cost us just over £650,000 last night on Tiger’s miss.”

Other bookmakers also reported heavy losses with Corals estimating a £400 000 loss whilst Skybet were also left cursing the "Miracle of Medinah" . A Skybet spokesman said: “While it was impossible not to get caught up in such a fantastic victory, Woods’s miss resulted in us taking a really heavy beating.”

Tiger Woods took only a half point from the 39th Ryder Cup and was not the bookies friend this morning as shell shocked bookies were left to count the cost of his mishap and generosity.
