Brendan Rodgers will expect Liverpool to stay alert on Thursday after branding his players ‘lazy’ on the last European night at Anfield.

Liverpool were caught napping after the break in the Europa League Group A game against Udinese on Merseyside three weeks ago and eventually lost out 3-2 as the Reds slumped to a third successive home defeat.

Victory for the Italians left the group wide open and one point separates the top three teams. Udinese and Thursday’s visitors Anzhi are tied on four points with Liverpool in third having defeated Young Boys in the opening group game in Bern.

Match betting on Liverpool v Anzhi is open too, the home side is 13/10 to win with Paddy Power while the visitors are rated a 9/4 chance by BetVictor who also bet 5/2 the draw.

Liverpool have arrested the run of home reverses since meeting Udinese, holding out for a 0-0 draw against Stoke before overcoming Reading 1-0 either side of the international break. However, Rodgers is likely to save a number of first choice players for Sunday’s Merseyside derby casting doubts about Liverpool’s ability to build on their first Premier League win at Anfield this season.

Russian Premier League leaders Anzhi provide formidable opposition, coming into the match on the back of six straight wins and having suffered defeat just once in 21 competitive games this season. The Russians would have a 100% record in the group but for Antonio Di Natale’s injury time equaliser earning Udinese a point in Italy.

Anzhi’s star man is Samuel Eto’o who scored both goals in the 2-0 victory against Young Boys and has bagged seven goals in the league so far this season. Playing alongside the former Barcelona and Inter star is Lacina Traore, a 6’ 8” Ivorian international with a fine goalscoring record at club and international level.

Ladbrokes offer 13/2 for Eto’o to score the first goal and 13/8 to score at any time while BetVictor go 15/2 Traore to be first player to score and 2/1 to score at any time.
