Beaten only twice in nine races over fences the Nicky Henderson-trained Finian's Rainbow gets his 2012/2013 season underway in Ascot's Amlin 1965 Chase at 2.10. The son of Tiraaz finished last season as the leading chaser over distances from two to two and a half mile with victories in the Sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham and Aintree's John Smith's Melling Chase.

It is far from clear as to what races the 9 year-old will end up contesting this season as stablemate Sprinter Sacre is a short priced favourite to snatch Finian's two-mile crown at Cheltenham in March and it is more than possible that Michael Buckley's gelding will be racing over trips in excess of the minimum in the months ahead.

High up in the ante-post market's for the 3m King George V1 Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and the 2m 5f Ryanair Chase at the Festival, the mount of Barry Geraghty faces no easy task in the 2m 3f Grade 2 Amlin Chase having to give weight to a number of talented rivals including For Non Stop and Captain Chris.

The former will have a fitness advantage having run out a most impressive winner of Aintree's Old Roan Chase last month and the 7 year-old's overall form stands up really well as the gelding was only just touched off by Paddy Power winner Al Ferof at Sandown last December.

One of Finian's Rainbow's two defeats came at the hands of Captain Chris in the 2011 Arkle, and on 10lb better terms would have an outstanding chance if  the mount of Richard Johnson could reproduce that effort. That is a big ' if ' however as the 8 year-old, for one reason or another, had a nightmare of a season in 2011/2012, but it would be dangerous to write-off the King's Theatre gelding just yet.

It was difficult not to be impressed by For Non Stop when routing the opposition in the Old Roan, and receiving 4lb from Finian's is taken to land the £50,000 contest at the 7/2 available with several firms.
