The classic Riviera course is one of the best tests that the PGA tour will offer this year. It measures 7349 yards and plays to a Par of 71. The course is tree lined and the fairways are very tight, miss them and any errant shots will generally come to rest in thick, tangly rough. Greens are small, and finding them consistently is a must.
Accurate, steady players do well here and the course is neither biased to long or short hitters. There are certain players that have a good track record here, and the peculiarities of the course obviously suit them.Limited player form is available so far this season and many players such as Luke Donald & Graeme McDowell have not swung a club in competition for over two months. So past form here as a betting guide is at a premium.
A player who may be worth having a few pennies on is Dustin Johnson. Whilst he did not play well last week, has had a good record here and has three top tens in five appearances at this event. This includes a third in 2010 and a fourth last here. Hopefully we will see a much better performance this week, and he is live E/W price at 22/1.
It may be worth taking a chance on J B Holmes who had a terrific record around this course and though his early season form has been rather rusty, he has never been outside twelve place on his five appearances here. A bet for him to finish in the top ten at 7/1 may be the value call.
Others to consider are obviously two time winner Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald and Ryan Moore. Lefty will undoubtedly go close this week, whilst the need to think your way around this course will appeal to Donald. Moore looks to be in good form and has also had a few good finishes at this course.
