After last weekend's Epsom jamboree today is a case of 'after the lord mayor's show' with a couple of Group 3 contests the best on offer from a quality perspective but with Royal Ascot little more than a week and a half away the lack of top-class action is easily understood.
Best racing of the days comes at Haydock which features several competitive handicaps plus the Listed Cecil Frail Stakes, as well as two Group 3's in the shape of the BetVictor Royal Ascot Money Back Pinnacle Stakes at 2.40 and the Timeform Jury Stakes (run for many year's as the John Of Gaunt Stakes) at 3.15.
It is the last named contest that appeals most as a betting medium in which the Charles Hills-trained Red Jazz makes plenty of appeal at the 11-2 guaranteed available with bet365. The 6-year-old mount of Robert Winston is closely matched with several rivals in the 7f race as last month's Pertemps Spring Trophy Stakes over the course and distance resulted in a victory for Eton Forever over Gregorian, Red Jazz and Pastoral Player.
The form received a boost when the runner-up went on to win last week's Investec Diomed Stakes at Epsom while Pintura, who finished last of six, has since lifted a York conditions event. No doubting that Eton Forever ran out a worthy winner of that Haydock contest but the ground was very different to what is expected this afternoon and should favour Red Jazz more than the Roger Varian-trained favourite, and the consistent son of Johannesburg is taken to gain revenge, recording his first victory since May 2012.
