Royal Ascot Tip: Biographer Can Win Ascot Gold Cup

25-1 long shot Biographer can win one of the most competitive Ascot Gold Cups in recent years

The 2013 renewal of The Ascot Gold Cup looks one of the most open in recent memory with few, if any, of the 18 runners that can be confidently eliminated as having little chance of taking the Group 1 2m 4f marathon, a fact which is reflected in the fact that bookmakers are going 6-1 the field, headed by a possible royal victory in the shape of the Queen's Estimate, the mount of Ryan Moore.

Colour Vision will attempt to repeat last year's victory but the 5-year-old is impossible to fancy on recent form although the grey son of Rainbow Quest is in his element over extreme distances and is likely to run well without winning. The horse who finished third on that occasion, Saddler's Rock, is another who will relish today's trip and with the ground on the firm side of good has every chance of improving on last year's position and of the leading contenders makes the most appeal at around the 8-1 mark.

In such an open contest however the advice is to have an each-way interest in a lightly-raced improving young stayer in the shape of Biographer, who is available at 25-1 with Ladbrokes. The David Lanigan-trained 4-year-old has only seven races to his name but his victory over Sir Graham Wade at Ascot last October marked the son of Montjeu down as a stayer to follow, especially when stepping up in trip.

The mount of Ted Durcan was beaten little over a length on his seasonal reappearance behind Tuesday's Ascot Stakes runner-up Tiger Cliff who was in receipt of 13lb in the Newmarket handicap, and with that race under his belt Biographer is capable of causing one of the biggest shocks in recent Gold Cup history.
