It’s a feast for flat racing fans this weekend as Ascot, York and Newmarket take centre stage.
The 8/1 we took about Stencive for the John Smith’s Cup earlier in the week looks good as 11/2 is the best price on offer now. If you aren’t on then don’t worry as he will inevitably be pushed out come Saturday morning and given he is drawn in stall 21 that may be accentuated. A wide draw should not be seen as a hindrance, as they generally come down the centre of the York straight these days.
There are two horses running on Friday that have been at the forefront of my mind for a while.
Caravan Rolls On was given too much to do on his reappearance in a Newmarket race that is working out very well. He can then be forgiven for not being at his best at Royal Ascot, as the drop in trip would not have suited. That considering, he ran really well.
Back up to 1m 6f for the 3.05 at Ascot tomorrow, he has a leading chance in a much easier race. He is the general bookies favourite at 11/4, so while I can’t put him up at such a short price, I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him.
The York 4.05 is a 5f handicap packed full of ageing, out-of-form or exposed sprinters. And at first glance, Lady Gibraltar doesn’t stand out as any different.
But go back to her run over course and distance on her penultimate outing, and she is a winner waiting to happen.
That run was a career best, and that is as good a piece of sprinting form as there is this season. The winner Kingsgate Choice has won since, the second York Glory ran away with the Wokingham. The fourth Elusivity has been contesting group races before and after. While the fifth Duke Of Firenze won the Epsom Dash on his subsequent outing.
Lady Gibraltar was third, and her run at Newcastle since can be forgiven as it was on unsuitable soft ground, and has served to enhance her price to 15/2 with BetVictor.
