July Cup, John Smith’s Cup (& Silver Cup), Bunbury Cup, Summer Mile, plus a whole host of competitive handicaps to go at – what a tremendous Saturday we are in for.
There are so many potential bets to be had, but it is in the second race of the day (and the first at Ascot) that I am going to recommend having a punt in.
It looks like a potential minefield of a 5f handicap, with many group class performers dropping in class in the hope of sparking a revival.
For many of the protagonists this will be about finding some form, fact-finding, or a stepping stone to a target at Goodwood.
There is one horse that has leading course form, is down to a winnable mark, will love the fast ground, and has shaped in his last two runs as if something much more positive was around the corner.
If Taajub was trained by a more high profile trainer than Peter Crate then he wouldn’t be anywhere near the 10/1 currently on offer with Bet365.
An Ascot course record of one win from seven starts doesn’t tell the whole story, as so often he has been just touched off there – including twice last summer of marks of 98 and 100.
He is down to 95 now, and his luckless runs at Epsom (drawn wide and forced the pace) and Sandown (not granted a clear run) will have put him spot on for this.
Elsewhere, the Bunbury Cup is perhaps the race that entices me the most, and it is by Es Que Love at 14/1with Betfred for the very much in-form Mark Johnston that I am tempted.
However, there is no telling what stall 19 will mean come race time, and if the preceding races prove that this is no hindrance, then he would be worth a good bet at that price.
