Mexico’s bid to win the Gold Cup for the third consecutive time suffered a setback when losing the opening game against Panama but Manuel De La Torre’s young side responded with victories over Canada and Martinique to secure second place in Group A.

Marco Fabian scored his third goal of the tournament when sending his side on its way to a 3-1 win against Martinique on Sunday setting up a quarter-final encounter with Trinidad and Tobago.

Stoke City striker Kenwynne Jones was on the scoresheet for Trinidad and Tobago in the 2-0 against Honduras which clinched second place in Group B having scored more goals than El Salvador who finished level on four points. Honduras were reduced to ten men when full back Jose David Velasquez was given his marching orders after only seven minutes and Trinidad and Tobago were able make their numerical advantage count to record their first win in the Gold Cup in 12 matches.
