Will Smith tips Bertiewhittle each way for the International Handicap at Ascot

It has been a theme of this column that if you had followed the horses mentioned on their next start or two, you’d be in clover.

There is one horse that I recommended backing to win the Buckingham Palace Stakes, and who I think is overpriced to win the International Handicap at Ascot today. Bertiewhittle has hardly run a bad race at Ascot, and the nature of the track dictates that some horses like it there and some don’t.

20/1 with Boylesports who are paying five places today makes real appeal for me. He is a better and stronger horse this year and has shown form required to win this on two occasions, when second in the Victoria Cup and then when a clear second to the sharply progressive Diescentric at Newcastle.

On the other two runs, he has not had luck with the draw or passage through the race. But as ever, when there are mitigating circumstances, it gives us a better price next time.

An entry in the Group2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood late next month shows that David Barron thinks his charge is better than a 97-rated handicapper.

He is drawn in stall 13 today, which should be about perfect for this hold-up performer to pounce under the excellent Fran Berry off the strong pace set by Es Que Love (stall 19) and Trail Blaze (stall 10.)

Redvers and Loving Spirit have a race of this nature within their capabilities but the draw hasn’t been kind to them, as they are stuck out in stalls 4 and 5, and there is no pace around them.

I would much rather back Bertiewhittle at 20/1 than either of those two at shorter odds.

International Handicap (Ascot 3.15):
Bertiewhittle (each-way) – 20/1 (Boylesports)
