Sri Lanka were never expected to make it very far in the SAFF Championship and got off to the worst possible start when they were played off the park by a rampant Maldives side in their opening fixture. The 10-0 scoreline was a bitter pill to swallow for Sri Lanka who gave themselves a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals when they were 1-0 up at half-time against Afghanistan in their second match. But Mohamed Fazaluzzaman's first half opener proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal in the end as Sri Lanka ended the game on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline and must pick themselves up for their final SAFF Championship match on Friday.

Bhutan were unlucky to go down 3-0 to Afghanistan in their opening SAFF Championship Group B match after matching their oponents for much of the game, but a lack of cutting edge in the final third meant their good play counted for nothing in the end. Bhutan Eleven then had to endure an embarrasing 8-2 defeat at the hands of Maldives in their second match, leaving them to fight it out with Sri Lanka to avoid finishing bottom of the group on Friday. One positive is that both Passang Tshering and Chencho Gyeltshen got their names on the scoresheet against Maldives meaning Bhutan have a better goal difference than Sri Lanka and a draw would be enough to prevent them from finishing bottom of Group B.

Despite having a worse goal difference than Bhutan, Sri Lanka may carry confidence into Friday's game having never lost to Bhutan in three SAFF Championship matches, with the last encounter ending 3-0 in their favour at the 2011 tournament in India.
