Nadal destroyed fellow countryman Tommy Robredo for the loss of just four games in the quarter-final on Thursday. Robredo eliminated Roger Federer in the previous round but could not compete against the 2010 US Open champion, losing 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 34 minutes.

Second seed Nadal heads the betting for the 2013 title and Frenchman, Richard Gasquet stands between the Spaniard and his third US Open final. Eighth seed Gasquet defeated David Ferrer in a five-set rollercoaster to become the first Frenchman to reach the last four of the US Open. The 27-year-old from Beziers in Southern France looked to have lost his chance after conceding a two set lead but held his nerve to the land the fifth set and win 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3.

Gasquet has never appeared in a Grand Slam final, the closest he has come was at Wimbledon in 2007 when losing to Roger Federer in the semi-final. He is yet to register a victory against Nadal in 10 previous meetings and their only Grand Slam encounter was at Flushing Meadows in the first round of the 2009 US Open where the Spaniard won in straight sets.
