Both teams head into Sunday evening’s fixture with a little to prove on the domestic front, and having finished third in Ligue 1 last season, Lyon will be hoping to quickly erase the memory of a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Montpellier. That result may have initially seemed to have been something of a surprise as Remi Garde’s team had held Lille to a goalless draw a week earlier, but with defeat to lowly Ajaccio and a draw against Rennes, it has been anything but a vintage campaign so far. Steed Malbranque needs no introduction to British punters and the Belgian is a key part of their midfield set-up, but more will be expected of striker, Bafetimbi Gomis. The French international was one of the top scorers in Ligue 1 last season and he’s failed to deliver anything like that level of form so far.
Bordeaux are sadly no longer the force that they were in the mid-1980’s, and as they appear unlikely to progress through to the next stage of the Europa League, it will be no surprise to see them giving their all in this fixture. Despite some poor European form, they are likely to have taken some confidence from their 4-1 victory over Sochaux. Malian striker, Chuck Diabate’s bagged a brace and made it the third Ligue 1 match in succession that he’d found the target. A Bordeaux in that sort of form would have to be treated with the utmost respect, but unlike the region’s wine, the team are notoriously bad travellers and they will be bidding to arrest a run of 11 away games without victory.

Last season saw Bordeaux win the corresponding fixture 2-0 before Lyon produced a spectacular 4-0 victory in Bordeaux. Neither team arrive at Sunday’s match at the peak of their powers, and with the visitors drawing three of their last four matches, another tie looks entirely plausible.
