Racing Tip: Sudden Wonder Pick Of Derby Longshots

The hype surrounding Aidan O’Brien’s Australia to win the Derby seems to have abated as odds for the Galileo colt drift on the morning of the Epsom classic which could be an omen to oppose the long standing ante post favourite.

Heavy showers on the Epsom Downs will mean the overnight going of good, good-to-firm in places will ease considerably and the bookies are doing the same with Australia’s odds which have been pushed out from 7/4 to 9/4 this morning. Ballydoyle connections believe Australia could be the best ever trained by O’Brien but the colt has yet to prove it on the racecourse,  although his close third in the 2000 guineas at Newmarket entitles him to his place at the head of the market.

With confidence on the wane, it could be worthwhile looking for an each way bet and Charlie Appleby’s Sudden Wonder looks the pick of the outsiders with a good chance of running into a place. Available at 66/1 at bet365 with best odds guarantee and price promise to match leading bookmakers should his odds change, the Godolphin colt is a tempting candidate in an open looking renewal.

Jockey Kevin Manning knows what it takes to steer a classic winner round Epsom’s undulating 12 furlong course, having rode Sudden Wonder’s sire, New Approach to victory in the 2008 Derby for trainer Jim Bolger. Manning is a more than able replacement for Mickael Barzalona who has ridden the colt on his last four appearances. Sudden Wonder should have no trouble seeing out the distance based on his breeding and the way he finished the Lingfield Derby trial where he stayed on for third behind Snow Sky.

Not an obvious choice to trouble the market leaders Australia, Kingston Hill and Geoffrey Chaucer but it’s unlikely all three will live up to expectations which Sudden Wonder looks the pick for punters who to go with a long shot.

Of the other outsiders, Our Channel and Kingfisher failed to impress when winning their Derby trials, Pinzolo has been found wanting at the highest level and it’s hard to see Impulsive Moment turning the tables on Western Hymn who beat him in Sandown’s classic trial.
