There is an element of deja vu about the mouthwatering prospect of an encounter between leading 3-year-old miler Kingman and the year older Toronado in next month's Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood as the 2011 renewal was won by the subsequent superstar Frankel who proved far too good for the previous year's winner Canford Cliffs, an inmate, like Toronado, of the Richard Hannon stable and ridden by Richard Hughes.

Like Sir Henry Cecil's great champion, Kingman is owned by Khalid Abdullah and comparrison between the two is inevitable after the son of Invincible Spirit's tremendous performance in winning the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh was followed by ' righting the wrong ' of his QIPCO 2000 Guineas defeat at the hands of Night Of Thunder when producing an electric turn of foot to mow that rival down in Royal Ascot's St James's Palace Stakes last week.

Toronado produced possibly his greatest performance when getting the better of Dawn Approach in the Sussex Stakes 12 months ago and the High Chaparral colt got this season off to the best possible start with a victory in the Queen Anne Stakes, the opening race of Royal Ascot 2014 beating former US challenger Verrazano by three quarters of a length.

Yesterday brought news that the clash the Flat racing world want's to see is almost certain to happen as connections of both horses confirmed their intention of heading to the Sussex Downs for the Group 1 contest on July 30th, a prospect relished by Harry Herbert, racing manager of Al Shaqab Racing, who said: " Kingman was stunning, and I have massive respect for him, but Toronado was good too, first time out, and he has the advantage of having been there and done it. We certainly go for the Sussex."

The only bookmaker currently betting on the race is Racebets who quote Kingman as the 5-4 favourite to mirror Frankel in beating his year-older rival who is a 3-1 chance to win back-to-back renewals.
