Fourth in the Ascot Gold Cup at the royal meeting, Brown Panther heads the betting and will attempt to return to winning ways in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at 5.45 Longchamp this evening.

Michael Owen and Andrew Black's six-year-old emerged as a leading player for the stayers' crown at Royal Ascot after a 2 and a quarter length victory over Hillstar in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes before going on to triumph over a two mile trip in the Group 3 Henry II Stakes at Sandown. There was little to fault about the Tom Dascombe-trained 6-year-old's performance when making the step up to Group 1 company and having only weakened inside the final 100yds in a strong renewal, there is every reason to believe that Brown Panther can justify his odds of 9/4 with Bet365 over today's 1m 5f 202yds trip.

Indeed, Seismos has six and a half lengths to find with Brown Panther on their meeting at Sandown while French stayer Fly With Me must shoulder a 3lb penalty for his success in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier in May. Terrubi was third in that race and may be the main danger to Brown Panther's chances, the 4-year-old is clearly held in high regard by handler Pascal Bary who has previously entered the colt in the Arc.

Should Brown Panther run his race then he's likely to regain the winning thread, something which his trainer Tom Dascome seems resonably confident about "He is well up to winning a mile-and-six-furlong Group 2 on soft ground and one would hope he can do it."
