Long time ante-post favourite Slade Power will almost certainly not be among the 5-day declaration entries for Saturday's Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock when thay are announced later today but trainer Eddie Lynam is likely to have an able deputy in stablemate Sole Power who is expected to attempt a third Group 1 victory of the season as the seven-year-old Kyllachy gelding is expected to get his favoured fast conditions with the weather predicted to be dry and sunny for most of the week.
Both sprinters have been suffering from ringworm this summer but while Sole Power recovered in time to take York's Nunthorpe Stakes for a second time last month the July Cup winner has only just returned to full work and is on course to have his final run in the A$1 million VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington on November 8th before he retires to stud. A general 8-1 chance over the weekend Sole Power is now as short as 4-1 for Saturday's race ( 6-1still available with William Hill ) with the news that the Aidan O'Brien-trained Due Diligence, runner-up to Slade Power in Royal Ascot's Diamond Jubilee Stakes, will not be declared for the 6f contest with the Ballydoyle handler saying: " Due Diligence won't run and it's possible we won't have a runner in the race at all."
Gordon Lord Byron will attempt to repeat last year's impressive three length victory in the race and is a top price 5-1 with Betfred and Coral to record back-to-back wins although the six-year-old will be without the services of recently retired Johnny Murtagh with trainer Tom Horgan likely to call on William Buick to partner the son of Byron, saying: " We have plenty of top-class jockeys who want to ride, but at the moment we think it's going to be William. We will see what's left in but he should be available to ride and would be the rider we're thinking of."
Other leading contenders expected to be among this afternoon's declarations are Music Master ( 8-1 Paddy Power ), Tropics ( 9-1 Betfred ) and G Force ( 12-1 Boylesports and Betfred ).
