Two-time winner Wise Dan will be one of 14 horses competing in the Breeders Cup Mile in Los Angeles this November.
The Charles Lopresti trained star, who has a host of major wins to his name, is looking to emulate the great Golidikova and win the race a record third time. The multi-award winning seven-year-old set a course record time of 1:31.78 in the 2012 Breeders Cup Mile and has to be considered as one of the big favourites again this year.

Seven of the 14 participants, meanwhile, will be handed automatic spots in the race through the ‘win and you’re in’ system. And Wise Dan will need to be at his very best as he races against some of the best grass milers in the World. Shoemaker Mile winner, Obviously, has already secured its spot in the race and finished third in 2012 and fifth in the $2million race last year. While trainer Freddy Head is aiming for a fourth Breeders Cup Mile victory and is expected to send Anodin to the United States. The Frenchman won the race twice as jockey with Miesque in 1987 and 1988 and trained Golidikova to three straight wins between 2008 and 2010.
Wise Dan will take some beating, however, following another impressive year from the experienced gelding. The seven-year-old, whose earnings so far are close to $7million, has tasted victory in the Bernard Baruch Handicap and Woodford Reserve Turf Classic this year. He missed three months of the year, however, requiring colic surgery following a loop in his intestine.
Obviously, meanwhile, produced a dominant front running performance in the Shoemaker at Santa Anita Park, the venue for this year’s Breeders Cup, in June. The 6-year-old has also won the GIII grade one Mile American Stakes in May and has won 11 of his first 20 races.
Anodin does not have a great record but has the experienced Head preparing him and three-time Mile winner Olivier Peslier in the saddle. The 41-year-old was the jockey during Golidikova’s record-breaking three consecutive wins but it would take something special to defeat Wise Dan this year.
Seek Again is also hoping to compete after a record breaking performance in August’s Fourstardave Handicap. The 4-year-old completed the mile at Saratoga with a time of 1:33.25 as he defeated Grand Arch by a neck.
