A blue moon has been rising over Manchester in recent years, and the current kings of English football are looking to strengthen their grip over their local rivals in another instalment of the Manchester Derby.
The tables have well and truly turned in this fixture over the last few seasons, with City overtaking their local rivals in both the head to head and league tables over the last twelve months.
Manuel Pellegrini enjoyed a convincing double over Man Utd last season winning both games by an aggregate score of 7-1. Can City extend their good run of form in the derby? Back them to maintain their dominance over United with Sky Bet and receive a free bet if you open a new account.
Despite City’s purple patch in the derby, Man Utd have still recorded more wins in this fixture overall. United’s 68 wins well and truly trumps City’s 48 victories to demonstrate their overall success in this fixture.
And although Man City have established themselves as top dogs in Manchester over the last year, it is worth remembering that Manchester United’s last victory in the derby came at The Etihad, where they will meet in November.
On that occasion Robin Van Persie scored a last minute winner and sealed Manchester United’s second consecutive 3-2 win at the Etihad after winning an F.A Cup fixture by the same scoreline the season before.
The frequency in which results to and fro in this fixture goes to show that when it comes to a derby fixture, the formbook goes out the window as the need for local pride engulfs all involved.
The pressure will be on Van Gaal and United though, who need big wins if they are to re-establish themselves among English football’s elite after a disastrous campaign last season under David Moyes.
The derby could be provided with a little extra spice for Marcos Rojo and Sergio Aguero. The Argentinian pair fell out during their World Cup campaign and if they both start they will be in direct competition with each other.
