The fourth tournament on the WGC calendar returns this November in the shape of the WGC HSBC Champions.
Hosted at the Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai, the tournament consists primarily of players who have won the top rated tournaments since the previous WGC-HSBC event.
With the event set to be packed with stars of the golfing world, picking a winner could prove tricky. However, if you think you’re onto a winner, back your man with Coral and get yourself a free £20 bet!
American Dustin Johnson recorded his first WGC victory in the event last year, winning by a three stroke margin from Ian Poulter. Johnson broke the tournament scoring record in the process after shooting -24 after his four rounds.
Poulter ran Johnson close as he finished -21, equalling his winning score from the previous year in 2012, which was also a tournament scoring record at the time. Poulter took that record from fellow countryman David Howell, who won with a score of -20 back in 2005 at the inaugural HSBC Champions event.
The event itself has seen a sharp rise in popularity and importance since then, and became a WGC event in 2009, four years after its maiden tournament.
Between 2010-2012, the event was considered an unofficial money event on the PGA Tour, meaning that money won did not count towards the PGA Tour list, although victories were counted as PGA Tour wins.
The 2013 tournament saw the WGC-HSBC Champions become an official PGA Tour event and part of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup schedule with the winner receiving a three-year PGA Tour exemption.
There will therefore be no extra motivation needed when the players tee off for this years event.
The 2014 event could see the most competitive field yet, with Major winners Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson joined by big names such as Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia, to name but a few.
To win the WGC HSBC Champions event this year then will require the champion to topple the worlds best. And that is, of course, the sign of a great golf tournament that is not to be missed!
