Michael van Gerwen will return to Minehead this December in an attempt to retain his Players Championship crown.
The seventh instalment of the Championships, which has been known as the Cash Converters Players Championships since 2011, will be held at the Butlins Resort in Minehead for the third consecutive year.
Van Gerwen triumphed last year after beating Phil Taylor in what was an all time classic match. Both players averaged over 100 as van Gerwen eventually took the match 11-7 in a nerve jangling affair.
The Power will be back to see if he can reclaim the title this year and if you want to back him to do just that, back him with bet365 where new customers receive 100% deposit bonus up to £200.
It is no surprise that Taylor holds the record for most Players Championship titles having won three of the six events so far. Taylor has won the Championships every other year and if that cycle is to continue, van Gerwen’s triumph last year means Taylor will win again in 2014.
There is a sense, though, that van Gerwen might be the man to finally dethrone Taylor as the undisputed king of darts. The German has set the pace right throughout the year and has topped the PDC Order of Merit table for some time and by some distance.
He has already been crowned PDC World Champion this year and the 25 year old looks to be going from strength to strength.
However, Taylor does have the edge when it comes to head to head’s with these two. Van Gerwen’s 11 wins against Taylor is well and truly dwarfed by the 26 times that The Power has defeated Mighty Mike.
This includes five victories for Taylor compared to just two defeats in 2014, suggesting that yet again Taylor is rising to the challenge of another competitor who dares challenge his dominance.
There will be others competing for the top prize in Minehead come December, but it’s fair to say that these two guys are the ones to beat. Whoever does topple these two giants of the sport, would be worthy winners of any competition.
