Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, it’s the fixture all Spurs fans dread and one Blues fans look to to find out where three points are coming from.
At least that’s how it’s been since the arrival of the Premier League in 1992.
During the Premier League era, Spurs have travelled to the Bridge 22 times and they’ve never returned to North London with all three points.
Their record reads: P: 22 W:0 D:8 L:14 and in that time they’ve scored only 14 times, conceding 43.
Their last victory in west London was in February 1990 when Gary Lineker popped up with a header at the back post to seal a 2-1 win.
Some 19 Spurs managers have since tried and failed to bring an end to Chelsea’s dominance with Mauricio Pochettino the latest man to try his luck.
Will he be the one to finally end the hoodoo and lead Tottenham to victory at Stamford Bridge? If you think so, back them with BetVictor and get £25 in free bets.
Spurs fans of a certain vintage may remember a time when points were relatively easy to come by at Stamford Bridge. Before the inauguration of the Premier League in 1992, Tottenham won 19 of their 44 games at Stamford Bridge with a positive goal difference.
There have been near misses for Tottenham during their barren run at the Bridge, none more so than their 4-3 defeat in 1994, a game that is still to this day considered a Premier League classic.
Tottenham hit the front early on and took a 2-0 lead before they conceded three unanswered goals to trail 3-2. Spurs sub Andy Gray then took centre stage by equalising from the penalty spot before being given the chance to retake the lead again from 12 yards.
On this occasion Gray couldn’t find the net and at the other end Chelsea were awarded a spot kick of their own. Mark Stein converted the penalty and Chelsea ran out 4-3 winners in the end.
Twenty years on, that is still arguably the closest Spurs have came to winning at Chelsea and the disappointing 4-0 defeat they suffered last season will provide them with little hope for the fixture this season.
