Michael Van Gerwen will defend his World Darts Championship title, with Phil Taylor next best in the betting

World Darts Championship holder Michael Van Gerwen will defend his title in London this December, with 14 time champion Phil Taylor no doubt determined to reclaim the trophy.

Van Gerwen and Taylor have developed a great rivalry in recent years and the pair have traded victories throughout 2014.

And before you take advantage of William Hill’s great sign-up offer, read our preview to help you make your mind up about which one to back.

Dutch star Van Gerwen defeated Peter Wright 7-4 in the final last year, averaging 100.10 throughout the tournament and picked up wins against Gary Anderson and former BDO World Champion Mark Webster on his way to the final last year.

He also thrashed 2011 & 2012 champion Adrian Lewis 6-0 in the semi-finals before racing into a 4-0 lead against Wright in the final as he became the sixth winner of the competition, and youngest at just 24.

And he carried his superb form into the opening night of Premier League of Darts, subjecting Taylor to his first-ever whitewash in the tournament, taking just 13 minutes to defeat ‘The Power’ 7-0.  He then returned home and defeated Mervyn King in the final of Dutch Darts Masters 6-4 in an entertaining final.

Mighty Mike then reached the semi-finals of the UK Open, losing 10-8 to Terry Jenkins before claiming his 20th PDC Tour title with a 6-1 victory over Dean Winstanley in the Players Championship final.

Taylor got his revenge on the star with a 7-4 win in the Premier League before defeating the Dutchman 6-4 in the German Darts Masters final. It was Van Gerwen who came out on top at World Cup of Darts, however, as he and Van Barnveld defeated Taylor and Lewis 4-2 in the final, with the 25-year-old condemning Taylor to a 4-0 whitewash.

Taylor recovered again, however, and reduced his younger rival to tears with a resounding 18-9 victory over Van Gerwen in the final of the World Matchplay. The veteran raced into a 7-1 and then 13-2 lead during the match and never looked back.

The Boxtel-born European star bounced back to claim the Singapore Darts Masters with an 11-8 victory over Simon Whitlock before falling to another defeat to Taylor, this time losing 11-9 in the final of the Perth Darts Masters.

The pair have traded blows throughout 2014 and you wouldn’t bet against one of the two triumphing again in London this winter. The question is, who will you be backing?
