2.05 AT THE RACES CHAMPAGNE STAKES ( GROUP 2 )
Only six runners but not short on quality with the Richard Hannon-trained Estidhkaar setting the standard after the son of Dark Angel’s runaway victory in Newmarket’s Superlative Stakes back in July and while the mount of Paul Hanagan is sure to take some beating he has to concede 3lb to the very useful BELARDO who is taken to come out on top in the seven furlong contest. The form of his debut maiden win has worked out well with the runner-up Heartbreak Hero now rated 91 and while a fourth place position in Newmarket’s July Stakes was slightly disappointing the Lope De Vega colt looked a different proposition when winning a Listed Newbury on his most recent start and looks an exciting prospect.
ADVICE – 2 POINTS WIN BELARDO 3-1 BETVICTOR
2.40 LADBROKE PORTLAND HANDICAP
One of the season’s most competitive sprint handicaps but with only 10lb covering top from bottom in this 22-runner contest it could be safer to look for potential Group sprinters rather than a handicap blot and the two horses who fit the bill are Stewards Cup winner Intrinsic and the lightly-raced MUTHMIR who is taken to come out on top with a pull of 4lb for just over two lengths in Goodwood’s speed test. Previously a most impressive winner of York’s SKYBET DASH William Haggas’s four-year-old looks every inch a top class sprinter waiting to happen and the son of Invincible Spirit should be more at home on Town Moor compared to the Goodwood undulations. Of the rest ALGAR LAD looks sure to go well after fulfilling earlier promise by winning his last two races and is open to more improvement.
ADVICE – 2 POINTS E.W. MUTHMIR 11-2 BOYLESPORTS – 1 POINT E.W. ALGAR LAD 14-1 SKYBET AND BETVICTOR
3.15 OLBG PARK STAKES ( GROUP 2 )
Aljamaaheer would take plenty of beating on his best form but is worth opposing at a short price after a poor run on his most recent start in the July Cup. The ground may not be soft enough for Gregorian so the 2 to concentrate on are ES QUE LOVE and CABLE BAY with a small bet on each the way to go. The former ran well over an inadequate 6f in last week’s Betfred Sprint Cup finishing a respectable sixth to G Force and should appreciate the step back up to 7f while the latter, a decent two-year-old who finished second in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, failed to get the best of runs at York on his seasonal reappearance last month and goes into the race a fresh horse.
ADVICE – 1 POINT WIN ON EACH ES QUE LOVE 7-1 GENERALLY – CABLE BAY 10-1 SKYBET, PADDY POWER and BETFAIR SPORTSBOOK
3.50 LADBROKES ST LEGER ( GROUP 1 )
With the ground drying out all of the time there is no guarantee that Roger Varian’s Investec Derby runner-up KINGSTON HILL will make it to post but it is hard to imagine connections bypassing the world’s oldest Classic unless the going is deemed unsafe, an unlikely prospect, especially as the son of Mastercraftsman has easily the best form on offer and should come home in front if allowed to take his chance. Second favourite Snow Sky is closely matched with Windshear and Somewhat on Gordon Stakes form and for those looking for a value alternative to the favourite could do worse than ALEX MY BOY, one of three runners from the Mark Johnston stable. The Dalakhani colt is improving with every run and should be more at home on Town Moor rather than Goodwood where he split two of tomorrow’s rivals in Forever Now and Kings Fete.
ADVICE – 2 POINTS WIN KINGSTON HILL 10-3 BETVICTOR - 1 POINT E.W. ALEX MY BOY 16-1 LADBROKES and BETBRIGHT
4.25 NAPOLEANS CASINOS AND RESTAURANTS HANDICAP
Bold Sniper and Mighty Yar are on a retrieval mission after failing to make an impact in York’s Ebor but in an open contest the bottom weight MOUNT LOGAN is the suggestion for his in-form stable. The three-year-old has a lot more to come and does not look overburdened off a mark of 96.
ADVICE – 1 POINT WIN MOUNT LOGAN – BEST MORNING PRICE
5.00 AGRIARGO UK TRACTOR CHALLANGE NURSERY HANDICAP
The Marcus Tregoning-trained SHAAKIS gets the vote in this open nursery after a good run a Newmarket last month. The son of Dark Angel failed to get a clear run there but stayed on to finish third in a contest where the form has worked out well with the second and fourth both going on to win since.
ADVICE – 1 POINT WIN SHAAKIS – BEST MORNING PRICE
6.05 HARRIET DE-VERE POWELL HANDICAP
With an Arab race scheduled for 5.35 the final contest of the 2014 Ladbrokes St Leger meeting is a straight one mile handicap in which the Richard Hannon-trained CHAMPIONSHIP is a speculative choice in an open heat. The consistent three-year-old has not enjoyed the best of luck this season but should go close if reproducing his three quarters of a length second to Moohaarib over the course back in June.
ADVICE – 1 POINT E.W. CHAMPIONSHIP – BEST MORNING PRICE
