The Breeders Cup World Championships returns this November with another weekend of action packed racing in store.
Saturday will see the Filly and Mare Sprint return for its eight instalment following its inauguration in 2007.
The weekend as a whole is growing in popularity year by year. Bets placed across the 14 Breeders’ Cup races totalled $136,539,014, which was an increase of 7% when compared with wagering on 2012’s 15 Breeders’ Cup races.

The Filly and Mare Sprint is run around one turn at 7 furlongs for the fastest females aged 3-years-old and over.
The inaugural event in 2007 saw the race run over 6 furlongs but that was changed to 7 in 2008 and has remained the same ever since. 2008 also saw the race record set. That year Ventura, rode by jockey Garrett Gomez completed the race in a time of 1:19:90. It is a record that still stands today as no horse in the following years has been able to match that time.
Groupie Doll trained by William Bradley has re-written the history books in this race recently, with wins in 2012 and 2013 making it the most successful horse to ever compete in it.
However, the retirement of Groupie Doll in February means that the race has ben blown wide open this year with a number of new candidates ready to take the top prize.
Among those contenders is last years runner up Judy The Beauty. She finished a length behind Groupie Doll last year but with her now not in the field, she has a realistic hope of going one better this time around.
Rajiv Maragh, the jockey who rode Groupie Doll to victory on both occasions, will be returning for a hat-trick of victories. This year will see him ride Artemis Agrotera, who has already won the Ballerina Stakes, a Breeders Cup challenge race, in 2014.
Maragh rode her on that occasion too and given his pedigree here, Artemis Agrotera could prove a real contender for this years race.
The other early contenders to challenge for victory include Madame Cactus, Midnight Lucky and Molly Morgan.
