There's a distinct case of deja vu regarding this Saturday's Betfair Chase at Haydock Park after nine horses were confirmed for the £200k contest at the six-day declaration stage including the first three horses home 12 months ago - Cue Card, Dynaste and Silviniaco Conti. Eight horses took part in last year's race and that could again be the case as Menorah from the bang in form stable of Philip Hobbs was said to be a doubtful runner should the ground prove too testing, although the trainer issued an upbeat bulletin on Monday, saying: "Menorah will run if the going is good to soft and we'd think about running if it was soft, but should it deteriorate to heavy he'd stay at home and wait for the King George."

Haydock clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright expects the two-day fixture to start on ground no worse than soft on Friday, despite most of the country facing a week of unsettled weather, of which Tellwright said: " The ground is soft at the moment and we are forecast to have one wet day in the first half of the week and after that it's not too bad, so I think soft is the likeliest option for when the meeting starts on Friday. We might get a bit of good to soft, but it is going to be broadly soft. I think we can pretty much rule out heavy ground."

The betting for the 3m 1f contest registered as the Lancashire Chase is headed by the last two winners of the race, Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti at 3-1, although Paul Nicholls charge can be backed at 7-2 with Winner and Betfair Sportsbook with the runner-up of 12 months ago Dynaste a standout 4-1 with the latter bookmaker. Our ante-post selection Taquin Du Seuil is now a top price 7-1 with Ladbrokes while Menorah, who did us a favour when running out a comfortable winner of Wetherby's Charlie Hall Chase, is available at 8-1 with Skybet, Betvictor and Stan James. The possible field is completed by Harry Topper (16-1), Double Ross (20-1), Medermit (20-1 Coral) and The Giant Bolster (33-1)
