It’s plain to see what makes the Players Championship one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the PGA Tour with the top 50 players in the world slated to take on Sawgrass this week.

Outside of the majors, this is the PGA Tour’s flagship event and one of the most intriguing betting events of the golf calendar. Defending champion Martin Kaymer will head up the strongest line ups of the season, bar the Masters, and the biggest challenge is expected to come from world number one Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth who has had an unforgettable start to the year topped by his victory at Augusta last month.

Tiger Woods is one of six multiple winners of the event and golf punters are going to need all the help they can get to finish ahead of the bookies with so many players capable of winning at this challenging course.

The 137-yard 17th hole at Sawgrass is one of the toughest tests at the Players Championshipt

What makes the TPC Sawgrass challenge

Course architect Pete Dye created a layout that tests every part of a player’s game and there’s no individual playing style that will be favoured on the Florida track. The Stadium Course is made up of doglegs created in both directions so no two consecutive holes have the wind factored the same way and care has been taken to ensure there is a long and short hole for every par.

The signature hole is the short, 137-yard 17th which plays over a lake to a green connected to land by a narrow pathway around the back left. It’s a test of nerve and accuracy, and even in benign conditions the casualty rate is high. 12 years ago the PGA began keeping count of how many balls found the water and last year had fewest with 28. The average is 45.9 and the record is 93 splashdowns in 2007 when 50 of those came during the wind ravaged first round.
