West Bromwich Albion travel to face out-of-form Newcastle United on Saturday, Freebets.com looks at the stats for Ayoze Perez and Saido Berahino up to see which striker is likely to come out on top.
Newcastle enjoyed a 0-2 victory in the reverse fixture at the Hawthorns, but to say the fortunes of both clubs have changed since that November encounter would be an understatement. Alan Pardew has since departed for pastures new and the Magpies have subsequently become embroiled in the relegation battle after taking just 9 points from a possible 48. Meanwhile the Baggies, who at that time were struggling, have been rejuvenated under Tony Pulis and now sit 7 points clear of the drop zone.
The home side will be pinning their hopes on Ayoze Perez to get on the score-sheet, while the visitors will look to create as many chances as possible for Saido Berahino.
Perez & Berahino Shooting Stats
Ayoze Perez was an under the radar signing for Newcastle having made a name for himself as a goal-getter for Tenerife in Spain’s second tier, but despite a fair amount of game time this season, the Spaniard has not been able to find the net consistently. Conversely, Saido Berahino is beginning to fulfil his potential and has already been knocking at the door for a full international call-up after a number of eye-catching displays this season.
We can see from the stats above that Perez has played just 1 game less than Berahino, yet has scored only half the amount of goals when compared to the England Under-21 striker. Perhaps this is because Saido has been able to get his shots off with more regularity over the course of the season with an average of 2.3 per game, compared to 1.7 per game for Perez.
With these stats in mind, it’s clear to see why Coral’s best odds on the First Goalscorer market have Berahino priced at 6/1, with Perez a point bigger at 7/1 to open the scoring in Saturday’s match.
Perez & Berahino Creative Stats
While still primarily judged on the goals they score, the modern-day forward is required to do much more for his teammates than in years gone by and the ability to link play from midfield to attack is a key part of the complete striker’s skillset.
We can see from the statistics above that Berahino offers more than just goals to the team, with an impressive 83.6% pass completion rate compared to just 79% for Perez. Saido also attempts an average 5 more passes per game than his Newcastle rival, so we can expect him to bring more of his West Brom teammates into play in important areas of the pitch on Saturday afternoon.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the pair get on in the match, but as Newcastle have to reshuffle their back-four due to suspensions to Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat, Berahino looks the best bet to get on the score-sheet and can be backed at best odds 37/19 to score anytime with 888Sport (treble odds for new customers).
