West Bromwich Albion play host to newly crowned Premier League champions Chelsea on Monday, Freebets.com looks at the stats for Craig Dawson and John Terry to see if either defender is likely to influence the result.

Last week’s 1-1 draw away to Newcastle secured West Brom's Premier League status for next season, meaning it’s mission accomplished for Tony Pulis after he replaced the sacked Alan Irvine at the turn of the year. Chelsea were also involved in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, though Jose Mourinho elected to give some of his fringe players a run out, which could also be a feature of this clash at the Hawthorns, where the Blues have failed to win at their last three attempts.

If the Baggies are to get another favourable result against the champions, then Craig Dawson will need to be on his game to keep out the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian and Loic Remy, while his opposite number John Terry will also have his hands full dealing with Saido Berahino and last time out goal-scorer Victor Anichebe.

Craig Dawson v John Terry Defensive Stats

Craig Dawson v John Terry Defensive stats

Looking at the stats above we can see that Dawson has been called into action far more often with 65 attempted tackles so far this season, compared to just 52 attempted tackles by Terry, and that’s having made 9 less appearances than the Chelsea stalwart. Terry has been dribbled past fewer times as a result of having a slightly better tackle success rate, but Dawson has also made quite a few more interceptions with 48 compared with Terry’s 31.

The statistics indicate that Dawson is more than willing to put his body on the line for the team with roughly 1 blocked shot per game played, while Terry is not one to shy away from such a situation, but has only been able to do so in 30 of his 36 Premier League games.

West Brom have conceded just one goal in the last 3 games and Craig Dawson has been a key factor in keeping Liverpool and Manchester United at bay. Those of you who fancy the 25-year-old to turn in another good performance can back West Brom to win with a clean sheet at best odds 13/2 with Coral.

WBA v Chelsea, Craig Dawson goes head to head with John Terry

Right away we can see that Dawson has not been as effective as Terry at getting on the score-sheet this season, though both players are available to back at the same price in the Anytime Goalscorer market, with the best value at Betvictor.

Dawson also has a less favourable pass success rate with 73.4% of his attempted passes finding a West Brom teammate, compared to Terry’s impressive 89.3% reaching the intended target. Perhaps this can be attributed to the relative disparity of the two teams and their respective goals in this campaign though, after all West Brom were not in the best of form before Christmas and Chelsea have been in control in many of their games this season. This could also explain why Dawson has registered so many fouls as he will readily take a yellow card for the team when the pressure is on or if the defence is looking outnumbered.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the pair get on in the match and whether West Brom can keep up their recent run of good results against Chelsea at the Hawthorns. One thing’s for sure though, Craig Dawson is likely to be in the thick of the action and how he handles the Chelsea threat could be key to the outcome of the game.
