With weather forecasters predicting it to be a dry and sunny week in Paris it is not only those tourists visiting the French capital who have reason to cheer as the connections of Investec Derby, Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes winner Golden Horn now look certain to cough-up the 120,000 Euro required to supplement the son of Motivator for Europe's richest race on Sunday, the Qatar Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe.
Although current conditions on the Bois de Boulogne are recorded as soft a long-range forecast from Meteo France suggests the Longchamp course will dry up significantly ahead of the mile and a half contest in which Criquette Head-Maarek's great mare Treve will attempt to become the first horse to win the race on three occasions, with a spokesman for the company saying: "It looks as if Friday and Saturday will have some cloud but will be dry, with afternoon temperatures of around 18C.
"Sunday could be more overcast, but the afternoon should still be dry. There will be an anticyclone in operation all week which should keep thing dry. I'd be fairly sure there will be no rain up to and including Saturday, but Sunday is a bit uncertain. At the moment it would appear any rain won't arrive until the evening."
Golden Horn's trainer John Gosden was in fine form at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting last week, sending out six winners including Shalaa in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes. While the stable's Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs looks increasingly likely to be aimed next at Ascot's Champion Stakes, the Anthony Oppenheimer-owned colt is Longchamp-bound, with his trainer saying: "If the ground is good to soft or better that would be great and he'd run, and I'd think Jack Hobbs would wait for the Champion Stakes. But we're in the hands of the weather and we'll see how the ground plays."
Meanwhile Treve remains a best price 10-11 with most bookmakers for a historic third victory at the weekend Golden Horn and could soon be challenging second favourite New Bay (9-2 Betvictor and Paddy Power) for that spot with 11-2 on Marathonbet now the best price available about Frankie Dettori's mount as stablemate Jack Hobbs continues to drift out to a general 10-1.
