Arsenal travelled to Lens for their second Champions League group game of the campaign and looked to be heavy favourites, especially after Gabriel Jesus fired the visitors in front after 14 minutes.

However, Lens hit back 11 minutes later before Elye Wahi made it 2-1 and secured the win in the 69th minute.

After the match, it was revealed that Arsenal are the first side that Lens have beaten multiple times in the Champions League.

In a further blow, Arsenal also lost Bukayo Saka to injury in the first half of the tie. Saka was dealing with an injury before the Gunners’ meeting with Bournemouth last weekend and with a huge game vs Manchester City on the horizon, his inclusion from the off vs Lens was a bit of an odd selection choice.

It was a gamble that did not pay off for Arteta as he lost the tie and one of his best players. Speaking post-match, the Arsenal gaffer provided an update on Saka’s injury:

“He tried to backheel a ball in the first half and felt something muscular,” Arteta explained in his post-match press conference. “He felt uncomfortable to carry on so we had to take him off.”
