Ayr Gold Cup Favourite Not A Certain Starter
The David O’Meara-trained Watchable is currently clear ante-post favourite for Saturday’s William Hill Ayr Gold Cup at a best price 12-1 with Boylesports and Ladbrokes but the four-year-old is a far from certain starter as the son of Pivotal must recover from his hard race at the Curragh on Sunday in which he just held the late chalenge of Zalty for a head victory. With only six days covering both races O’Meara is keen to monitor the horse’s wellbeing this week before committing the gelding to Ayr’s feature race, saying: ” We are going to see how Watchable is later in the week. It is quite short between races and we will see how he comes out of it before we make any decision. He did it well, but it was only yesterday.”
Another O’Meara inmate, Great St Wilfrid winner Out Do, is another who could miss out after his below-par effort at Doncaster at the weekend but stablemate and runner-up 12 month’s ago Louis The Pious ( 28-1 Bet365 and Ladbrokes ) is a confirmed starter in an effort to improve upon his two and a quarter length second to Highland Colori, of which his trainer said: ” He was second last year and we hope he can go one better. We were pleased with his run at Ascot last time. He has been running over seven furlongs but that’s not a concern – I think you need something who nearly stays the seven to go well at Ayr.”
No few than 194 horses stood their ground at yesterday’s six-day declaration stage headed by last year’s third Jack Dexter but with a maximum 27 allowed to go to post anything currently weighted below 8st 12lb is in danger of missing the cut leaving a small percentage of those remaining eligible for the consolation Silver or Bronze Cups.
