Bangladesh slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of host nation Nepal in their opening South Asian Football Federation Championship match leaving coach Lodewijk de Kruif to lament a poor defensive display by his side. The Dutchman has cited Nepal’s packed home stadium as a cause of pressure on Bangladesh saying “If you go down 2-0 so easily, with such a backing, you can’t make back such a deficit.” Despite the early setback, De Kruif has remained upbeat about Bangladesh’s chances and is looking for improvement in the next couple of matches against India and Pakistan.
India managed to pick up a win in their first game with an own goal from Pakistan’s Samar Ishaq proving the difference between the sides. The Blue Tigers were lucky to earn three points against their arch rivals despite not giving a good account of themselves leading coach Wim Koevermans to call for improvement against Bangladesh. While the Indian defence held firm against Pakistan, forward Sunil Chhetri was starved of supply and the focus will be to provide better service to the striker on Tuesday. Koevermans also has the option of adding another forward to his starting eleven to give India more of an attacking edge and it will be interesting to see how they line up against Bangladesh.
