Betfair is refusing to buy into the new-found optimism at Old Trafford and is offering to refund sportbook bets on Manchester United to win the Premier League at a cost of around £100,000.
The arrival of Juan Mata in the January transfer window and the return of Robin Van Persie have given the Reds a lift and with Wayne Rooney fit again, fans are hoping David Moyes’ men can mount a late challenge for this season’s title.
Betfair’s Sports Operations Director. Nick Hagen thinks it’s just a distant dream and his firm’s sportsbook is now offering the top industry price of 70/1 for Manchester United to finish top of the table.
Hagen said on his company’s blog: “After Fergie retired, many United fans were left ruing their 2013/14 Title winning bets.
“We’ve decided to refund those stakes and offer an industry best price of 70/1 on them to win the title this season. Even with the renewed optimism from the arrival of Juan Mata and the victory over Cardiff our traders simply can’t see it happening.”
It wouldn’t be the first time United have defied huge odds, they landed that famous treble in 1999 with a remarkable injury-time goal to win the Champions league final against all odds. Even the most optimistic Manchester United fans can’t ignore Betfair’s offer, they can cash in their early season tickets and go back in at much bigger odds.
