The 200/1 success of Thomas Bjorn at the Qatar Masters was apparently very expensive for bookmakers with Bet365 and William Hill reporting massive losses on the event .
Bjorn was one of five tips put forward by the Racing Post golf correspondent Steve Palmer and Bjorn duly won the event by four shots . The Dane who will be 40 this month was ranked only 134th in the world before the tournament but Palmer noted that Bjorn was in form and had excellent previous form at the Doha course which is often battered by strong winds .
Bet365 were the only bookmaker offering 200/1 pre tournament and spokesman Steve Freeth admitted ” Palmer has a cult following and his tips never go unbacked.”Freeth continued: It betters any tipping achievement I can ever think of and we doff our caps to him, these sort of losses are very rare in golf and it’s purely down to Palmer.”
Also suffering were William Hill who offered Bjorn at 150/1 before the event and spokesman Rupert Adams said “There were a load of each-way bets to small stakes” and admitted that Hill’s had lost on the tournament .
Bjorn had last won on the European Tour in the Portuguese Open last June but had been 10 under par for his final three rounds in similar conditions in the Volvo Champions Tournament in Bahrain the previous week .
This week the European Tour moves on to Dubai and the Dubai Desert Classic which is played at the Emirates course in the city centre . The appearance of Tiger Woods in the Dubai Desert Classic is certain to mean there will be some great value prices available for some less well known players again .
