Boxing: 12 Rounds with Kiko Martinez


Five years on from their first meeting, Kiko Martinez and Josh Warrington go head-to-head once more with the Spaniard defending his IBF world featherweight title in Leeds this Saturday night.

Martinez will have happy memories of his last trip to England last year, as he brutally knocked out Kid Galahad in Sheffield to become a two-weight world champion.

Josh Warrington is looking to regain the title he lost to Mauricio Lara in February last year, going 0-1-1 with the Mexican across two frustrating fights.

But there are often swings and roundabouts in boxing and Warrington will count his lucky stars as he is handed another shot at featherweight glory.

We sat down with Kiko Martinez for 12 Rounds of questions ahead of his first world title defence since 2014:

First memories of boxing:

I remember perfectly well when I entered the gym for the first time when I was 14 years old. It was an incredible feeling, I felt like I was born for this.

Favourite fighter, past or present:

Julio César Chávez. For me he is the greatest, I learned a lot watching his videos. I’m also a big fan of Mike Tyson.

Best friend in boxing:

My best friend in boxing is my partner Ismael García. I have known him since he was a child and I hope he can win the Spanish championship soon.

Biggest fear:

Spiders! I hate these creatures!

Favourite movie:

Pirates of the Caribbean, I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it.

Favourite music artist:

Anuel AA, a raper from Puerto Rico.

Favourite cheat meal:

I love McDonalds, especially their ice creams, McFlurrys.

Your perfect vacation location:

I don’t have anywhere special to go. I like to be at home in peace, with my family and my animals

If you weren’t a boxer you would be:

I’m sure he would be a footballer. Before boxing, I played football. I would have loved to play for Elche, my hometown team, or Real Madrid.

If you could invite one person to attend your next fight who would it be:

If I have to pay for the tickets, nobody! Haha!

I can’t live without…:

Easy question. My family is what I love the most.
