The 150th British Open has got off to a flying start on Thursday morning at a calm and largely dry St Andrews.
Britain’s Rory McIlroy has set a blistering early pace with a first round 63 which is 9 under par .
For a long period world number one Tiger Woods looked set to shoot a similar score but the double St Andrews British Open winner faltered with a bogey at the notoriously difficult 17th and Tiger could only manage a par at the last after driving into the valley of sin in front of the 18th green . Woods approach from the valley of sin was a weak effort finishing seven foot short of the hole and he missed the resulting birdie putt .
Conditions have been perfect for low scoring and whilst the wind is forecast to increase during Thursday , more low scores can be expected .
Most bookmakers are betting in running on the event and Boylesports are offering 1/4 odds 1-2-3-4-5 in running during Thursday .
With world number 2 Phil Mickelson still to tee off for his first round Boylesports currently make McIlroy the 3/1 favourite to win the British Open with Tiger Woods just behind on 4/1 .
