What could be the biggest race in Formula 1 history, the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, is now less than 100 days away. Sadly, if it is technically not already, the World Drivers’ Championship could already be over.

Max Verstappen is currently on a winning sequence of eight and that run could stretch to 13 by the time the F1 roadshow lands in Nevada. Online Formula 1 betting sites have closed the market on the Dutchman taking the title. He is 1/3 to win the next race on the calendar, the Dutch Grand Prix, and only 5/1 at William Hill to win the remaining ten races of the season.

But his Red Bull car is a cut above its rivals and drivers should not be judged within the confines of what their cars are capable of. Their merit should be based on what they have achieved using the equipment they have to work with.

At the halfway point of the season, below are the marks we believe F1 drivers should have taken home during their summer holidays:

  • Max Verstappen: A+
  • Fernando Alonso: A+
  • Alex Albon: A
  • Lewis Hamilton: A
  • Lando Norris: A
  • Charles Leclerc: B
  • Oscar Piastri: B
  • Nico Hulkenberg: B
  • Esteban Ocon: B-
  • George Russell: B-
  • Valtteri Bottas: B-
  • Yuki Tsunoda: B-
  • Carlos Sainz Jr: C+
  • Sergio Perez: C
  • Zhou Guanyu: C
  • Lance Stroll: C-
  • Pierre Gasly: C-
  • Kevin Magnussen: C-
  • Logan Sargeant: D

Nyck de Vries is not on our list as he was axed by AlphaTauri following a string of poor results. He, like Logan Sargeant would have been awarded a grade-D. The big question now, will the American also be shown the door?

His Williams teammate, Alex Albon, has out-qualified him 12-0 and he has also beaten him in 10 of the 11 races that both have taken part. Sargeant has not earned a single World Championship point and the latest press reports suggest he could soon be replaced by Mick Schumacher.

Schumacher, the son of the legendary Michael Schumacher, was linked with a race seat at Williams ahead of the current season. He had previously raced for Haas for two years. The German is currently working for Mercedes as its reserve driver. And it is no coincidence that the Williams team use Mercedes engines.

Late summer is always a good time for speculation in Formula 1 and the rumour mill continues to suggest Lewis Hamilton may leave Mercedes at the end of 2023 and join Ferrari.

According to The Express, “Lewis Hamilton has received two approaches from F1 rivals Ferrari this season with the Italian manufacturer attempting to bring the seven-time champion into the fold at Maranello.”
