Canford Cliffs 3/1 Favourite With Bookmakers To Uphold 2000 Guineas Form In Irish Equivalent.

Canford Cliffs, third behind French colt Makfi in the 2000 Guineas is 3/1 favourite with bookmakers for Saturday's Irish version at the Curragh.

A field of 13 will go to post for the Abu Dhabi Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh this Saturday, with trainer Aidan O’Brien responsible for saddling six of the runners.

Canford Cliffs is 3/1 favourite with StanJames and Victor Chandler, while Aidan O’Brien’s exciting prospect Steinbeck is available at 10/3 with the latter firm.

Richard Hannon’s colt was a creditable third in Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas, after failing to settle in the early stages.

The form of the race has subsequently been franked by stable companion and runner-up Dick Turpin, who went on to finish second in the Poule D’Essai Des Poulains ( French 2000 Guineas ).

As well as Canford Cliffs, the English challenge will include the Clive Cox trained Xtension, who finished fourth at Newmarket, and Ralph Beckett’s outsider Oasis Dancer.

Steinbeck’s trainer Aidan O’Brien has made no secret of how highly he rates the son of Footstepsinthesand who will be having his first run of the season, after suffering a minor setback earlier in the year.

That setback prevented the colt from taking part at Newmarket and O’Brien will be hoping for a bold show, before a possible crack at Ascot’s St James’s Palace Stakes, in which a possible clash with Makfi is likely.

Fencing Master, best price 11/2 with William Hill, looks to be O’Brien’s second string but has attracted strong support all week.

The colt finished behind both Canford Cliffs and Xtension in seventh place at Newmarket, but was a most promising second in the Dewhurst Stakes as a two year old, when Steinbeck could manage only fourth.

Apart from the O’Brien team, John Oxx’s Keradari and the Tommy Stack trained Noll Wallop represent a strong home challenge for the 325,000 Euro contest.
