Carlo Ancelotti aware of potential Portsmouth Cup Upset
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has cautioned his side against complacency in Saturday’s FA Cup final. Ancelotti’s side will face relegated Portsmouth at Wembley stadium as they look to secure a historic double.
The Italian manager says he is wary of the potential for an upset after witnessing Pompey dispatch Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals for the competition.
"There have been a lot of surprises – Leeds beat Manchester United and Reading beat Liverpool – so we need to pay attention," stressed the Ancelotti.
“On paper we have more quality and possibility to win but we have to play well. It’s a great opportunity to win the Double for the first time but if Portsmouth play better they could win."
Chelsea beat Portsmouth 5-0 at Fratton Park when the two sides met in March and have won 13 out of 14 games against the south-coast side, drawing the remaining game. Ancelotti has stated that he believes the cup final will be a different affair, despite the two sides finishing at opposite ends of the Premier League table.
"We won and played well but at that time they didn’t have a lot of motivation but they will on Saturday and it will be a different game," he said.
"We have to have respect for Portsmouth. They were relegated but they deserve to play in this final after beating Tottenham in the semis. We have to fight against them to win this game.
"It is an opportunity for them to save the season. We have to play against players with strong motivation.”
Blues player Frank Lampard believes that a win on Saturday will confirm this as the club’s best season in their history.
"It’s huge. Obviously it’s never been done here as a club and for this group of players it’s something we really want to do.”
